Brúðarbandið (The Band of brides) is a seven piece all-girl band from artic Iceland playing glorious rock’n’roll wearing wedding dresses. Formed only in the end of the year 2003 the girls have taken the Icelandic scene by storm and played numerous venues along with the Iceland Airwaves festival. But The Brides wanted More, and in the beginning of 2005 they toured the States, performed in Ystad, Sweden and finally at Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Last but not least the band was chosen by Sonic Youth to be its supporting act at their Reykjavik concert in 2005.
The band is formed on the principle 'curiosity is the greatest virtue'. All the girls had at one point or another played an instrument and some of them had even gotten so far as to be in a band but when Brúðarbandið first came together the girls decided that each of them had to try out an unfamiliar instrument. They claim ignorance is a bliss and had great fun discovering new things together, fulfilling their initial goal. And not only did they have fun, for the band had barely put two songs together when asked to play at a gig. Things then continued to get seriously out of hands as more songs were written, more gigs played and in the end finally were offered a record deal with 12 Tónar.
Their debut is called Meira! which is Icelandic for 'more'. What can be said of Meira!; Raw and edgy punk which put's the band in simular footprints of bands such as The Raincoats, Bikini Kill and early Stranglers with a twist of Blondie on the side. The lyrics are in Icelandic but that does not matter as you will not find it hard to fall under The Brides harm and just scream for More!
The Brides manifesto is something special and it will surely do you good to read it, live it and act it!
