Band members Dagur Kári and Orri Jónsson started doing their lovely lo-fi music in the mid 90s and have since then released a bunch of beautiful but for many yet to be discovered albums. Quicksilver Tuna (94) and Fousque (96) are the first two, in all their lo-fi punkness and 4-track cassette genesis.
Since then Slowblow has widened their artistic field. Dagur Kári went to Copenhagen to study film, and then went back to Iceland to direct his debut feature ’Nói Albínói’. The film holds an original score by Slowblow. It’s a tender and intimate soundtrack taking you into the mind of the young protagonist stuck between cold snowy mountains in the vast but yet so claustrophobic Icelandic nature. Home made sounds and lo-fi tracks on piano and guitar set the atmosphere of both coldness and the exotic, and clear lines are drawn between the island of Iceland and Hawaii!
Apart from the grand guest personages of Pétur Hallgrímson, and Valdi Kolli, Kristján Freyr, and vocal contribution from Kristin Valtysdóttir of Múm on ”Aim for a Smile”, the Slowblow duo themselves play a diverse range of instruments, including guitar, banjo, piano, Rhodes, harmonium organ, xylophone, copycat, electric bass, musical saw and a chair. The album also has two original tracks by Sigrídur Níelsdóttir as well as a beautiful version of Shostakovich’s “Elegy”. ‘Nói Albínói’ was rcorded with the help of Valgeir Sigurdsson and mixed in the by now famed Sigur Rós studio Sundlaugin.
Dagur Kári is currently working on his next feature film, and Orri is together with friends doing a documentary on before-mentioned Sigrídur Nélsdóttir. Apart from this Slowblow will release a split 7” with Essie Jain this fall ´07.
